East Kalgoorlie, Western Australia
Oil on canvas 70 x 90 cm
Station Hill is a small hillock in the Goldfields of WA, not far out of Kalgoorlie. I was drawn to its rich colourful character, and made a sketch. Months later, when over at my Kalgoorlie Arts Centre, around midnight I began applying very thick oil paint to the canvas with a palette knife. I exaggerated its size and height about ten fold for artistic effect. By 4 am this work was complete.
Entries needed to be in by midday for the annual Kalgoorlie Art Prize. After a few hours sleep and breakfast, I went about framing the painting and it was handed in wet — only to win the prize by the end of the week. It was also high up in the public choice vote.
