Maricopa Point View – Grand Canyon
Oil on canvas 45 x 60 cm
Our friend Tenzin once worked as a Park Ranger at the Grand Canyon. When he heard we planned to go there during our 2009 visit to US national parks, he said “Be sure to go to Maricopa Point for the best view on the South Rim.” We spent a long afternoon checking out all the viewpoints on the South Rim, and all were spectacular. In the end, we concluded Tenzin had a good point, for at Maricopa Point you can see the Colorado River snaking through the depths of the Canyon far below, and the colours and shadows on the Canyon walls change with every cloud that passes. The grandeur of the Canyon is breathtaking, and this painting represents both the physical view and the feeling of awe I experienced, witnessing it.
