Harwoods Hole Lookout
Oil on canvas 40 x 30 cm
Late on a summer afternoon, Lethea and I hiked 45 minutes to Harwood’s Hole at Canaan, atop Takaka Hill. One of Golden Bay’s special features, Harwood’s Hole’s vast depth attracts cavers from all over the world, and has seen its share of injuries and spectacular rescues over the years. Unknown to many who visit the Hole, just a few dozen metres away and hidden by dense bush, is this wonderful lookout which offers magnificent views over the upper Takaka Valley. On this magical afternoon, the last rays of sunshine through silver-lined clouds highlighted the nearby foothills while bathing the distant valley in luminous light.
